Google wants your input for the design of the Pixel 2

The design feedback request has been posted on the Pixel User Community by Krishna Kumar, Product Lead for the Pixel. Kumar also shared a link to a recent article from CNet which highlights Google’s meticulous and extensive design process for last year’s two Pixel phones.

So far, the majority of those who have contributed by leaving feedback have highlighted the phone’s large bezels, lack of waterproofing and the single bottom speaker as major design issues which should be addressed. The issue of the Pixel’s limited availability has also been mentioned a lot, but that seems to be a bit off-topic.

If you have any constructive feedback, Krishna Kumar and the Pixel team would love to hear what you have to say.

We’re also curious as to what design changes you’d like to see on the Pixel 2. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Google Rolling Out ‘Instant Tethering’ to Pixel and Nexus Devices

Google had been internally testing a feature named “Instant Tethering” for a while now. Essentially, this feature allows devices to share their cellular data connection through Wi-Fi, automatically and seamlessly. Automation is the crucial part of this feature, as previously we would have had to manually create hotspots on our phone and manually connect to them from other devices.

When a client loses internet connectivity but the host still retains internet access through a cellular data connection, the client will display a prompt asking you whether you want to connect to a hotspot. Choosing the ‘Connect’ option will automatically create a secure hotspot connection between the two devices. This eliminates the need to interact with the host device to initiate a hotspot whenever a client loses connectivity. To preserve battery, the connection will stop after 10 minutes of idle time with no usage.
Currently, host mode is available on the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P on Android 7.1.1 and up. Client mode is available on these devices as well as the Pixel C and Nexus 9 on Android 6.0 and up. The host and client must be signed on the same Google account, and must have Bluetooth and WiFi switched on throughout.

Android 7.0 Nougat rolling out to Honor 8 starting tomorrow

If you happen to own an Honor 8, we’ve got some good news for you… Honor has just announced that Android 7.0 Nougat will start rolling out to Honor 8 devices tomorrow, February 10! While the initial rollout will begin tomorrow, the company says all Honor 8 devices will receive the update by the end of February.

Wondering what this new update brings to the Honor 8? For starters, the smartphone will finally get the big EMUI 5 update, which is the same interface that debuted on the Huawei Mate 9. This means you’ll finally have the ability to enable an app drawer, which is something many U.S. Honor 8 users have been requesting since the device’s launch.

There are plenty of other big changes coming with EMUI 5 too, like more dynamic, static and local security options, a new design that’s inspired by the Aegean Sea landscape, and also the ability to rearrange the settings list. Honor says this new update will bring reduced mis-touches, as well.

Of course, we can expect to see plenty of other Nougat-specific improvements and features coming to the device, including multi-window mode, bundled notifications, customizable quick settings, Doze Mode on the Go, and much, much more. To learn more about Android 7.0 Nougat,

Sony has relaunched its Android Nougat rollout to the Xperia Z3+, Z4 Tablet, and Z5 series

Sony previously halted the rollout soon after it began due to a number of bugs — despite that it had been up and running on the Xperia X Performance since last year. Sony said the rollout was suspended due to “Inconsistencies related to audio playback via third-party apps and SD card encrypted data read performance,” that some users had experienced after upgrading to Android 7.0, Nougat.

Now, Sony is rolling out the new firmware, build number 32.3.A.0.376, over-the-air which should house fewer technical problems. Sony is selling fewer Xperia phones, but the mobile unit is making money again. It’s been about three weeks since we first reported on the story and about two and a half since Sony first responded to it. However, Sony remains one of the first manufacturers to roll the Nougat update out beyond its latest phone series (the Xperia Z3+, for example, was released in September 2014) — so we won’t judge it too harshly on this particular misstep. Check your device’s software update page to see if it’s ready to download the software now.

Download YouTube Go for Android APK to download

YouTube developers have always been working to offer the users with options to save videos so that they don’t have to worry about the times when the phone is not connected, and they are trying to make it ethical by giving the offline options. Now, a new app makes it even better with a lighter app offering the users with easier choices to save and share the videos on YouTube.

Named as YouTube Go, the app itself is about 8MB in size, giving an indication of what the developers have in mind. But it is the features that makes the app different from the official YouTube app. Control Your Data by choosing to download or stream and even preview videos before you download or watch. Sharing the videos is one of the other major features where you won’t be using data while sharing your videos with friends nearby. Google says that only a 15kb security check will be done before the person can watch the video that you shared.

Downloading the videos is another advantage and that can be done either to the internal storage of the phone or to the SD card. Also, when it comes to Android version compatibility, this will be running well in any phone that runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and later.

Facebook's New Rules Let Video Creators Make Money on the Side

Facebook is aggressively courting video creators with money and lots of eyeballs. It’s latest peace offering: The go-ahead to publish native ads on Facebook, or videos that brands have paid them to create or that include product placement.

Native ads (or “branded content”) is how a lot of video creators make a living. They build up a following, and then introduce that following to brands or advertisers who pay for the privilege. It’s a popular business strategy for video creators who use YouTube and even Twitter’s Vine.

And now that business is possible on Facebook, too, although there are limitations. Creators have to specify when video is “branded,” for example, in which case Facebook will include a tag to distinguish which advertiser paid to produce the video. A creator also cannot include any pre-roll or mid-stream commercials within their videos. (YouTube has the same limitations in its guidelines.)
But what’s happening here is pretty simple: Facebook wants people creating great video content for Facebook, and they’re more likely to do that if they can make some money on the side. It’s the same reason Facebook is paying celebrities and media properties to use its new live video product.

It’s also why Facebook prioritizes live and traditional video in its News Feed algorithm, bumping it higher in News Feed so more users will see it. More eyeballs means more incentive for video creators to post more often.

But it’s hard to believe Facebook won’t want to monetize these kinds of videos at some point — after all, creators are making money from Facebook’s audience. There are a few ways Facebook could do this. It could ask for a cut of existing revenue agreements. Or place its own ads before or alongside branded content with some kind of revenue split in place with creators.

WhatsApp have officially rolled out an optional two-step verification feature on the messaging App

WhatsApp have officially rolled out an optional two-step verification feature on the messaging app, requiring a six-digit passcode for any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp.
Essentially, it will prevent anyone but you (or anyone you provide the six-digit passcode to) from verifying your phone number on the app, handy in case your phone would ever fall into the wrong hands.
WhatsApp have been testing the feature in Beta mode since the tail end of last year but have now rolled it out officially and it is easily accessible in WhatsApp; simply open the app and go to: Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable.
WhatsApp do not verify the email address to confirm its accuracy and highly recommend you provide an accurate email address so that you're not locked out of your account if you forget your passcode.
They also stress that if you receive an email to disable two-step verification, but did not request this, do not click on the link as someone could be attempting to verify your phone number on WhatsApp.

Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a featherhead and forget your passcode and haven’t provided an email address, then not even you will be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp within seven days of last using it.

“After these seven days, your number will be permitted to reverify on WhatsApp without your passcode, but you will lose all pending messages upon reverifying - they will be deleted,” a notice on the WhatsApp FAQ page reads.
“If your number is reverified on WhatsApp after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, and without your passcode, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created upon successfully reverifying.”

Android Nougat rollout for Sony Xperia Z3+, Z4 Tablet, and Z5 series starts up again

Sony has relaunched its Android Nougat rollout to the Xperia Z3+, Z4 Tablet, and Z5 series.

Sony is selling fewer Xperia phones, but the mobile unit is making money again

Let us know what you think of it in the comments.

YouTube opens mobile live streams to those with 10k+ fans, paid Super Chat extra

Google’s video powerhouse YouTube is today taking its latest step to compete with Facebook Live and Twitter’s Periscope to be the go-to platform for live video streaming, specifically of the unscripted, on-the-fly kind. YouTube today is turning on live video recording directly from its mobile app for creators who have at least 10,000 subscribers.

And on top of this it’s taking Super Chat — a service where viewers can pay to bump up their comments in the stream — out of beta. Now, live video creators with over 1,000 subscribers in 20 countries can turn it on, and viewers from 40 can pay to promote their pearls of wisdom. The opening up of YouTube mobile live streaming comes about six months after Google first turned on the feature for a select number of users (such as Lewis of Unbox Therapy and athlete-turned-YouTuber Ben Brown). In a blog post, product managers Barbara Macdonald and Kurt Wilms write that the feature will soon be rolled out even more widely, beyond the 10,000 follower mark set today.
As with the more limited roll out, the live streaming feature is built into the app, where you will be able to snap a cover picture, and then press another button to start recording. Once the live video is over, YouTube visitors will be able to discover them just like they would any other video (and you the creator can also set up privacy features as you would for any other video). One thing that’s different with the version of live streams on mobile going live today is that YouTube will slow down live chat. “It turns out receiving 2,000 messages per second is a little too fast!” Macdonald and Wilms write. They also note that they’ve also worked on improving streaming quality across a wider range of devices.
YouTube likes to remind us that it has been a notable platform for people to watch live streams since 2011, with events like Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking skydive in 2012 attracting 8 million live viewers on the platform; and more recently, the U.S. elections seeing millions come to YouTube to watch debates and other events as they unfold. The difference here is the emphasis on videos recorded by YouTubers and everyday people with mobile devices, an area where YouTube has been slow to move. However, the significance of YouTube finally making a move to expand live vide streams on mobile is that it’s far and away the world’s biggest platform for online video today, with over 1 billion users (nearly one-third of all internet users) visiting at least once a day. While broadcast TV has died a little in the age of on-demand content, it’s services like this, created on platforms the size of YouTube, that have a shot of resuscitating live video popularity for today’s consumers and creators.
super-chat-youtube…and, it might be added, advertisers. YouTube — like Facebook — has been playing with a lot of different formats for how best to monetize video — from autoplaying videos interspersed with ads to adding “midroll” ads during a single video” on its platform — and today marks a wider launch of another revenue-generating feature. Creators making live videos on desktop or mobile can now turn on Super Chat for comments. Launched in a beta version last month, Super Chat will let viewers pay some money to boost their comments and pin them to the top of the pile for some time — the degree of the boost and pin will depend on how much a commenter is willing to pay. (It’s not unlike the Cheering feature that launched on Twitch last year.) Creators will be responsible for moderating their own Super Chats, as they do their live chats, YouTube notes.
It also looks like YouTube splits revenues for Super Chat in the same way that it does for AdSense, as you can track your revenues from them in the AdSense dashboard. Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Super Chat is that it lays the groundwork for paying for a whole lot of other things during live streams, and also helps motivate creators to make more of these live streams as part of their bigger business efforts.

Asus announces the ZenFone 3 Zoom and previously leaked ZenFone AR

Asus is announcing two new smartphones at CES, and each of them is notable for different reasons. There's the ZenFone 3 Zoom (left), which as the name implies, has optical zoom. Then there's the ZenFone AR (right), which was leaked by Qualcomm's site a few days ago.

Google Mobile First Index Seen In The Wild?

Last November, Google said they are experimenting with the mobile-first index but recently told us it isn't launching any time soon. But now some are seeing the mobile-first index in the Google desktop search results.

A WebmasterWorld member said when he searches for [Ikea USA], [Macys] or [Zalando] amongst others, he sees the M dot URL come up in the search results, instead of the WWW.

Personally, I am seeing www.ikea.com/us/en/ and not m.ikea.com/us/en/ but this searcher is seeing m.ikea.com/us/en/ for the Ikea search.

Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if Google is testing this with more users. Have you seen the Google mobile-first index in the wild yet? I have not.

Reliance Jio now dragged to CCI by Bharti Airtel over predatory pricing

Bharti has said Jio will continue to provide free voice calls, which is again predatory in nature with the objective of injuring rival telecom operators and creating a monopoly.  Bharti has said Jio will continue to provide free voice calls, which is again predatory in nature with the objective of injuring rival telecom operators and creating a monopoly.

Bharti Airtel has approached the Competition Commission of India (CCI) accusing the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) of predatory pricing and indulging in an anti-competitive behaviour, reports Rishi Ranjan Kala in New Delhi.

The move comes around two months after Jio Infocomm moved CCI accusing the three incumbent operators (Vodafone, Idea and Bharti) alleging that they are abusing their dominant market power and formed a cartel of sorts and denying it the requisite number of points of interconnect, which is inconveniencing its customers

While the CCI’s stance on the Bharti’s complaint is still not known as it was filed only on February 2, with regard to Jio’s complaint which was filed in November 2016, the CCI has asked its director-general (investigation) to investigate the matter and see if there’s any merit in the case.
However, the development underlines the growing confrontation between the incumbent operators and Jio with both sides accusing each other of indulging in anti-competitive practices.
For instance, Bharti and Idea Cellular are already in the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal alleging that sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has been a mute spectator to violations of laid down regulatory norms by Jio. The next date for hearing on the matter is February 6.
In its complaint against Jio in CCI, Bharti has said the company through Reliance Industries (RIL) has created a pan-India telecom network and distribution infrastructure even before its commercial launch and is now providing free voice and data services.
“No other telecommunication operator in the Indian market (or even across the world) is offering services free of cost or any free unlimited voice calling on the network of other operators, offering free voice calls cannot be said to meet the competition and fall under the exception. The same is predatory,” Bharti has said.

Responding to Bharti’s move, a Reliance Jio spokesperson said: “This latest salvo by Airtel is a clear ploy to divert attention from its own violation of licensing conditions by having denied adequate POIs to Jio and the already announced censure proceedings by the TRAI against them.”
Airtel is also acting against consumer interest by stridently opposing the ‘free voice’ benefit that Jio has been able to provide customers due to its superior next generation IP based technology, he added.
“All tariff plans of Jio have been found to be non-predatory by the regulator, so the question of our offerings being predatory does not arise,” the spokesperson said.

HTC 10's delayed Nougat update for mainland Europe due out soon

Earlier this morning, we passed along some good news about the HTC One M9. In mainland Europe, Android 7.0 is being pushed out for that handset. But as so often happens with an Android update, chaos reigns. For example, if today's rollout goes without a hitch, in mainland Europe the older HTC One M9 will have been updated to Nougat

Settings
On both Marshmallow and Lollipop TouchWiz iterations, the settings were grouped into categories, and were color-coded, so you had a general idea where you are in the list, long as it may have been. Additionally, you could set up quick access to the settings you fiddle with most often.

Not any more - the settings menu has been completely overhauled. A push to a single-tiered menu, where you're always 2 taps away from a settings may sound great, but that's made for a looong list of settings. And we mean long.
